Ed founded Serious Eats in 2006 and is the creator, host, writer, and co-producer of the podcast Special Sauce with Ed Levine. In 2016 he was inducted into the James Beard Foundation's Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America. He published a memoir, Serious Eater: One Man's Perilous Quest for Pizza and Redemption (Penguin Random House) in 2019. In writing the book Pizza: A Slice of Heaven, he ate 1,000 slices of pizza in one year.
Before founding Serious Eats in 2006 he was a regular contributor to the New York Times Food Section. He has also written for the NYT Magazine, GQ, and Rolling Stone, among many other publications. He was the host of the radio show Dish on WNYC, the NPR affiliate in NYC. He co-hosted the television show New York Eats with the actress Susie Essman and the former Vogue food critic Jeffrey Steingarten for the Metro Channel. He has also co-produced records, including two Dr. John solo albums; and co-produced concerts by artists like the late Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis, and Tom Waits.
Ed is the author of four books, New York Eats, New York Eats (More), Pizza: A Slice of Heaven, and the aforementioned memoir Serious Eater. He has also co-authored three other books, The Young Man and the Sea (with David Pasternack), Tom's Big Dinners (with Tom Douglas, Shelly Lance, and Jackie Cross), and the Serious Eats book. Serious Eats won two James Beard Awards in 2010.
Ed's Desert Island Food:"I can't choose just one. On any given day it could be barbecue, fried chicken, French fries, pizza, or burgers. I love them all because they're all usually affordable, lend themselves to sharing, and in most cases even bad versions don't suck."
